“Meet Our Partners”: Megan Metzger Consulting
We spoke with Megan Metzger of “Megan Metzger Consulting”. She began her journey into this industry as a nanny during college. Later, she began a nanny agency called “Preferred Childcare”, based in North Carolina, which she currently owns and operates.. Megan opened her consulting business, Megan Metzger Consulting, in order to helping agency owners and provide them with clarity, direction, advice, resources and tools. Megan’s reach and resources spread far and wide and she is affiliated with organizations such as the International Nanny Association (INA) and well as the Association of Premier Nanny Agencies (APNA), where she has been a keynote speaker, led workshops and given presentations on agency best-practices.
My Household Managed’s involvement with MMC has allowed us to collaborate with and learn from agencies all over the U.S. We were fortunate enough to attend a MMC retreat in September of 2022, where we met with other female business owners and entrepreneurs. The resources that MMC provides enables our business to perform at peak efficiency and continue to serve our clients and candidates using industry best practices and recommendations from some of the best in the business. One of our guiding values is to always be learning and to find areas of improvement in order to promote continued growth and development. Megan has been a huge value-add to our business and has helped to promote the continued growth of My Household Managed.
Tell us more about MMC ? The story behind it? How it started, etc?
I founded MMC after a significant personal life change and challenge. After 13 years of marriage and having 3 children, 2, 4 and 7, I decided to end my marriage.
Since my ex-husband was very active in the family with the children, I went from 24/7 support to none at all. Fortunately, nannies and sitters from my Preferred ChildCare business assisted with my transition to single motherhood. Anyone going through a divorce will agree it is difficult, especially with children on the line. I didn't realize how common this situation was until multiple friends shared how they wished they could start over as well but could never afford it. I was heartbroken at the idea of being stuck in an unhappy marriage or relationship because they couldn't afford to leave financially.
This realization is what triggered my need to start MMC. I took my knowledge, experience, the materials I created, and the systems I perfected over 20 years as a successful nanny agency owner and created a blueprint to teach other women to build their own nanny agencies.
Fortunately, my existing business - Preferred ChildCare provided financial stability that mitigated the uncertainty of beginning another entrepreneurial endeavor. While I hope other entrepreneurs who start their own agency have much happier reasons for building them, the fact is, financial wealth and support are life-changing.
This security allows you to positively impact the community you live in, to give your children access to the best education, care, opportunities and passions, including mine of traveling around the world.
My reason then and my ‘why’ today are still the same: I want to help as many women as possible thrive and become financially independent.
Who are your customers?
Our clients vary from nannies who are dreaming of starting their own agencies to owners who have been in the business longer than we have. The one thing every successful MMC Client has in common is a growth-oriented mindset, the awareness to know that asking for help actually means they are strong and the willingness to share ideas and advice with others in our community. The community we create is one of the best parts of MMC, when one of us grows and learns we all grow and learn.
What services do you provide and in what locations?
We provide a variety of services based on our client's needs and budget. Some of our most popular options are one-on-one consulting, group consulting, project-based consulting, online courses and retreats.
Do you have a favorite story from working in your business or a memory you are particularly fond of?
There are so many moments that happen weekly and even daily that excite me and encourage me. This type of work is very rewarding and often doesn't feel like work to me. One story in particular that I am fond of is the story of a young agency owner who called me very distressed because she had found out she was pregnant and her business was still run mostly by her. She knew she had to make some big changes to have the time and financial resources for a paid maternity leave. We got to work quickly and she made fast decisions and thoughtful changes. When the baby arrived she not only was able to take a 6 MONTH PAID MATERNITY leave but came back to work only part-time and the business continued to grow and flourish. Helping a new Mom be able to spend time with their newborn and not stress about finances is something to not just be fond of but to strive for every day.
What’s next for MMC? Any fun events or news you'd like to share?
We are hosting our 7th client retreat in March 2023 in beautiful Ellijay, GA. The venue is unlike any other homes we have chosen before. It is on 265 private acres in the mountains of GA. We will have intensive workshops, fantastic guest speakers and chef-created meals in a backdrop that will encourage reflection, harmony and a much-needed break.
If you were to hire a household employee for your home, which type of employee would make your life easier and why, OR, if you already employ household staff, how have they provided value to you and your family?
We have a nanny/household manager who is vital to the success of my home life. She really partners with me to assure the kids are cared for, and are taken to and from school, doctors appointments, and activities. She prepares healthy meals for our entire family, does the grocery shopping, laundry and helps organize the home. Her dedication and hard work to our family allows me to focus on the kids when I get home instead of the home needs. She makes such a difference in my home and decreases my stress load so much I plan to keep a household manager even after the kids have outgrown the need for a nanny.
